Story Time With Jen

I am so excited to share my latest project with you! http://story-timewithjen.blogspot.com/

My new blog is up and I'm so happy with it! My hope is that it will become a resource of ideas and a place sharing for librarians, children's staff, teachers and parents.

The blog's focus is on Early Literacy, Story Times, and other Children's programming. I'll also be reviewing picture books, early readers and books to share with babies and toddlers.

I'll still be posting on this blog too!
I love Lost in the Library and am so grateful for your support since this all began.

Much Love,
Jen (librarygal)

By the way, like Lost in the Library, Story-time with Jen was designed by the fabulous
Tawni at
Forever Design Studios.
Thanks Tawni! xo

8. Halfway to the Grave (The Night Huntress Series) by Jeanine Frost. OH so good. And steamy.

Are our lists similar? Any that you've already re-read?

Banned Books Week Giveaway

Banned Books week ( in the states) begins today and runs until next Saturday October 1st. The Canadian version of Banned Books Week called "Freedom to Read" is usually in February.
Both are important weeks and need our support. Books are empowering, freeing, address issues, start conversations and often remind us that we are not alone. Books are not dangerous. They are memory makers and life savers. We have the right to read what we want and we should always have the freedom to choose and ensure that others have that freedom as well. For more information check out this link- http://www.bannedbooksweek.org/

TGIF- Reading Challenges

TGIF is hosted by Ginger at GReads!
This weeks question:

Reading Challenges: Did you sign up for any this year?
How has your progression been?

I signed up for a few this year.....
The Début Author Challenge
The Non-Fiction Challenge &
I challenged myself to read 75 books this year on GoodReads

I've definitely done well in the début author challenge, I love reading début authors, I am often blown away by their first book. I also think it's important to support new authors. I haven't been very good at linking my reviews up to The Story Siren or entering the give-aways though..

I've not followed through on the Non- Fiction Challenge at all! I made a goal of 12 non-fiction books and I've only read one. (pathetic)

I'm at about 45 books read for the year which means I'm a bit ahead of my challenge on Goodreads. 45 is great for me so far considering I only read about 50 the whole year last year. Sometimes I feel badly that I don't read as much as other bloggers,  but all we can do is what we can do right?

What Challenges have you entered this year? What ones would you recommend signing up for next year?

Top Ten Tuesday- Books I Feel Everyone has Read but Me

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. Each week we post our top ten lists on a variety of bookish topics. I love the topic this week!
My List:

1. Beautiful Creatures  by Kami Garcia- I have had this in my to-read pile 4-ever!!! Just haven't had a chance to pick it up.

2. Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins. This isn't even out yet, but I feel like I'm the only one who hasn't had a chance to read it.

3. The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson. This is out today, I'll def. be picking up a copy, the reviews have been wonderful!

4. Looking For Alaska by John Green. I know, I know, How could I have not read this? I own it, I love John Green...what's my problem?

5. 13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson. Again I have this book buying obsession, I own 13 Little Blue Envelopes, and people have raved- I just haven't made the time.If only there was a way I could take 3 months off work and spend it catching up on my TBR pile.

6.Where She Went by Gayle Forman. Followers of this blog, know my love for If I Stay. I bought Where She Went the day it released, just can't bring myself to read it.......I guess because I loved If I Stay soooooo much.

7.House of Night Series by PC Cast / Kristin Cast. I just have not been interested, but I know many who love this series.

8.Gone by Michael Grant. I have a dear friend who just loves....LOVES this series. Every time we meet for coffee, she asks if I'd read it yet and every time I say "not yet" I feel terribly, horribly guilty.

9. Nearly everything Oprah selected for the book club on her show. I worked in a book store, when Oprahs' Book Club was going strong. The day that she announced her book club choice...the phones rang off the hook.  I remember people would ask ....have you read_____________________? and I'd reply "no" and they would say "but...it was on Oprah!!"

10. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I love Sense and Sensibility. I have 5 different editions, but I've never read or even watched P & P.

Are there any on the list above I just have to read?

It's Friday!!! TGIF & Follow

TGIF is hosted by Ginger at GReads. Each week a new book related question is posted:
This week:

Book Disappointments: Have you ever come across a book you were so stoked to read, but it failed miserably in your eyes?

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

I know that there are many who have loved this book, actually the entire series. There is still a waiting list for this one at my library. I thought it sounded wonderful, my book-club chose it as a selection, it's adult and met my "adult" quota for the month. I didn't get past page 100. Apparently, If I had read to page 132, I would have been hooked. But 132 pages? That's a lot of time to devote to one book before getting hooked.
Have you read it?

It's been forever since I participated in the Friday Follow which is hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. I really liked the question this week:

What imaginary book world would you like to make a reality?

The world of Harry Potter.....it's real already isn't it? A very small part of me likes to believe that it is, a larger part of me can not wait for my Pottermore email :)

Have a great weekend everyone! Be sure to leave I link so I can check out your answers:)

Library Land

It's September and right now at work I'm busy working on planning and prepping my fall library programs. My head is buzzing with story times and songs and rhymes, craft and science activities and now in the middle of it all I need to plan out and outline my programs for winter! AHHH!

I'd really like to offer a Lego program for school-agers but I'm not sure where to begin (aside from getting the blocks) If your library has offered a Lego program, or you're in the process of planning one, I'd love to know what your including, how many blocks you need to run it successfully, what group size you have, and if you store the creations week to week or the kids start fresh every week?

Thanks!

Waiting on Wednesday- 09/14-11

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly feature where we post about the books we can NOT wait to read....It's hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

My pick this week:

The Name of the Star (Shades of London, #1)

The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson
to be published by Putnam Sept 29 2011

Summary
The day Louisiana teenager Rory Deveaux arrives in London marks a memorable occasion. For Rory, it's the start of a new life at a London boarding school. But for many, this will be remembered as the day a series of brutal murders broke out across the city, gruesome crimes mimicking the horrific Jack the Ripper events of more than a century ago.

Soon “Rippermania” takes hold of modern-day London, and the police are left with few leads and no witnesses. Except one. Rory spotted the man police believe to be the prime suspect. But she is the only one who saw him. Even her roommate, who was walking with her at the time, didn't notice the mysterious man. So why can only Rory see him? And more urgently, why has Rory become his next target? In this edge-of-your-seat thriller, full of suspense, humor, and romance, Rory will learn the truth about the secret ghost police of London and discover her own shocking abilities.

What's your pick this week?

Perfect Square by Michael Hall

Perfect Square

Perfect Square by Michael Hall
Published by  Green Willow Books April 2011

Summary
A perfect square is transformed in this adventure story that will transport you far beyond
the four equal sides of this square book. An entire world out of one simple square. This ingenious picture book celebrates how creativity can change the way one looks at a basic shape . . . or the world itself.

A fab colleague of mine introduced me to the amazingness of this book.  I used for a reading buddies program this past summer which is for children in grades 1-4. But I really think the book would have great applications for all ages as well and would make a terrific art lesson.

Ideas to Extend the Book:

  • We provided metallic paper squares and had the children cut, rip and change them to create their own pictures. You could also take it a step further and have them create a story around their picture
  • Using Tangrams- Tangrams are a puzzle made of 7 flat pieces that you can put together to form a puzzle, there are many combinations. There is even a folktale to go along with how they were created.- http://www.tangrams.ca/puzzles/puzzles.htm

Dear Bully

Dear Bully Edited by Megan Kelley Hall and Carrie Jones
Published by Harper Teen September 1st 2011
ARC provided by the Publisher

Summary
You are not alone
Discover how Lauren Kate transformed the feeling of that one mean girl getting under her skin into her first novel, how Lauren Oliver learned to celebrate ambiguity in her classmates and in herself, and how R.L. Stine turned being the “funny guy” into the best defense against the bullies in his class.
Today’s top authors for teens come together to share their stories about bullying—as silent observers on the sidelines of high school, as victims, and as perpetrators—in a collection at turns moving and self-effacing, but always deeply personal.

I would never dream of reviewing a book like this because the stories contained within are the personal stories of the author. It wouldn't be possible to review their experiences. I will however say how important a book like this is, how scary the statistics are and how sad it made me to read and remember the cruelty of  others. This book needs to be on the bookshelves of every home with a school-ager, tween or teen. In every school classroom, in every school library and in every public one too. It should be required reading for every teacher and school Principal. It needs to be accessible to everyone because the message that  "you are not alone" is such an important one.

My story: (this is me being brave and personal-because the authors are inspiring)

I can tell you that when I was in high-school I felt like the "most" alone person in the world.  In between grade 8 and grade 9 was the summer that really started it all. I hung out with my best friends everyday and every evening. We partied, had sleepovers, and watched endless amounts of horror movies. In August of that summer my family took a vacation- I was gone 4 days. That's it. 4 flipping days. And I came back to a complete life change. My friends no longer spoke to me. I had no idea why, I never did find out because they never said. I got the silent treatment, and when they weren't being silent they were calling my house and saying horrible things, and sometimes evening threatening me. When I told my mom she said "they are not your friends then" but they were, they had been and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what had happened.
Of course this made starting high-school in the fall terrifying. I switched schools. I went to a school where I thought no one would know me. I sat alone at lunch, and then I skipped school to avoid sitting alone at lunch and then somehow I became a target there as well. I was spit on, shoved, kicked, threatened, held down while a boy did something awful. So I switched schools again- that was my mom's answer- switching schools- I switched 6 times. I never went to Prom or graduated High school (I did much later by doing equivalency exams) I hated myself, and spent a lot of my time wishing I could just disappear. I still have trouble trusting people, and I always have this fear when I go away that when I get back people I love won't be there in the way they were before. I'm not sure that I will ever get over that. But now as an adult I have friends who are there for me, a husband that I'm madly in love with, a son who lights up my life everyday and a job where I can support and encourage kids, adults and teens. Maybe I wouldn't have that if my life as a teen would have been different?
I wish there had been a Dear Bully book 14 years ago.

Highly recommended.
