This is Not My Hat–Blog Tour-Jon Klassen

TINMH_blogtour_buttonUS

As a fan of Jon Klassen’s award winning I Want My Hat Back picture book, I was thrilled to be invited to participate in the Global blog tour for his latest book This Is Not My Hat.  As part of the blog tour I had the opportunity to interview Jon:

Where does your artistic inspiration come from?
I think mostly I just like communicating. It's not even about communicating anything specific, I just really like the exercise of getting something across. I guess it's sort of proof that you're not crazy.

Growing up did you always want to be an author and artist? Who encouraged you?
I did always like drawing and writing, and I think I always hoped I'd be able to get a job doing something like that, because I didn't really get interested in many other things, or at least I wasn't very good at them. I've been lucky about encouragement. My parents always thought and still think that a job doing this is a totally realistic idea and a valid thing to spend your time on. They had that great balance of encouragement without the pressure. The more distance I get on it, the more lucky I feel about that. I don't think a lot of people get it.

What is your favourite thing about being a published author?
Having a book spine. A book spine with your name on it is a crazy thing to see. Also getting to sort of design them is really fun. How often do you get to design something with those kind of dimensions?

Do you have a favourite library memory? (can be a childhood memory or even now)
I think a lot of the libraries I grew up with were built in the 70s, and they have a certain way they felt inside. A lot of wide open carpeted spaces with weird raised carpeted platforms here and there, and big potted plants and very high ceilings with windows in them. It's frustrating to be in a place like that as a kid because all you want to do is run as fast as you can from one end to the other, and that's not really allowed, so you just walk around with your teeth clenched looking for book spines with the 'mystery' stickers on them until you calm

I was excited to read that you are originally from Niagara Falls, when was the last time you were back and what is your favourite activity to do when you visit?
Yeah! I try and go back a few times a year. My parents still live there. I really love driving down the parkway along the river. I used to bike it a lot, and it's still one of the nicest stretches I know of. I think Winston Churchill called it the best Sunday afternoon drive in the world, or something like that.

If you were a hat, what kind of hat would you be?
I wear a baseball hat almost all the time, so even though i might like something more original, it would be dishonest of me.
Jon_Klassen

Any new books/projects in the works?
A couple, yeah! I'm working on another of my own, and another one with Mac Barnett, who wrote Extra Yarn. They are both at the stage where I take long showers and stare at nothing until the hot water runs out.

(Thanks a lot for the questions Jen! It's great to talk to somebody from the home province!!)

Thank you Jon! I have to say that interviewing and talking with authors is one of my most favourite things  about blogging and one of the reasons why I blog…feeling pretty blessed right now!

My Review

I'm happy to announce that I also have 1 copy of  the book and a "This is Not my Hat" hat (adult size) to give away. Check out My Little Bookcase tomorrow (October 16) for the next stop on the tour!

Guest Review- Forever and a Giveaway

Donna and I met when I worked at the library near the high school where she taught. She was kind enough to let me join the high school book club she began and we partnered running the meetings. I instantly felt a connection with her as she loves YA as much as I do and is such a wonderfully, kind and genuine person. She is also tons of fun to be with and we have the same sense of humour. I'm so happy that even though we no longer "work" together, she's become a very dear friend.

Her Review of Forever:

Forever (Wolves of Mercy Falls, #3)

Forever by Maggie Stiefvater
Published by Scholastic
July 2011

Summary:
The thrilling conclusion to #1 bestselling Shiver trilogy from Maggie Stievater
In Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other. In Linger, they fought to be together. Now, in Forever, the stakes are even higher than before. Wolves are being hunted. Lives are being threatened. And love is harder and harder to hold on to as death comes closing in.

I am sure that book enthusiasts would agree that trilogy series are standard fare these days. I am also sure that book enthusiasts would agree that finding a perfect trilogy--with all of the compelling writing, magical storylines and emotional peaks--is not the norm. I cannot imagine the pressure that these authors face. Being responsible to readers for upholding their commitment and expectations would make me crumble!

All I can say is quite simply, "Bravo, Maggie Stiefvater." The Wolves of Mercy Falls is a series that is worth reading. This final installment was amazing.

The continuing storyline of Grace's entry into her existence as a wolf and Sam's desperation to know that she is okay remains a powerful draw in Stiefvater's final novel, Forever. Their love for one another does not diminish; however, they are forced to deal with the realities of their situation and how living partly as humans and as wolves will impact a future together.

The additional storyline of the relationship between Isabel and Cole is phenomenal. In fact, it is this parallel tale that I was deeply connected to. The character of Cole St. Clair is irresistible--his intelligence, sarcasm and vulnerability is a lethal combination!

All four characters are forced to make significant decisions as the townspeople (led by Isabel's father) have committed to a cleansing of the wolf pack. As Cole finds himself closer to creating a serum to "cure" the transition from human to wolf, it is really a race to see if everyone can be saved.

Yes, this is a romance; yes, this is a story about werewolves. However, Stiefvater treats her readers with respect. This is not a sappy melodrama. This novel (and series) shows incredible dedication to character development and takes its readers on a satisfying journey filled with feelings of suspense, loyalty and hope.
Thanks so much for doing this review Donna!!!

As some of you might recall, I was fortunate enough to attend a signing event with Maggie in July. I picked up an extra copy and had it signed to giveaway here.

I have one hardcover of Forever signed by Maggie to giveaway.

The ASHES, ASHES Plague and Pestilence Blog Tour

I'm so excited to be a stop on The Plague and Pestilence Blog Tour!!

Ashes, Ashes
Ashes Ashes by Jo Treggiari
Published by Scholastic Canada June 1st 2011
Summary
A thrilling tale of adventure, romance, and one girl's unyielding courage through
the darkest of nightmares.
Epidemics, floods, droughts--for sixteen-year-old Lucy, the end of the world came and went, taking 99% of the population with it. As the weather continues to rage out of control, and Sweepers clean the streets of plague victims, Lucy survives alone in the wilds of Central Park. But when she's rescued from a pack of hunting dogs by a mysterious boy named Aidan, she reluctantly realizes she can't continue on her own. She joins his band of survivors, yet, a new danger awaits her: the Sweepers are looking for her. There's something special about Lucy, and they will stop at nothing to have her.

My Q & A with the wonderful Jo Treggiari
Huge thank you's to Scholastic for arranging the tour and to Jo for stopping by!
1. I found the beginning chapters with Lucy on her own very emotional, her desperation to survive and the memories of what was, made me want to weep for her. How did Lucy’s character, who she is, and her ideals come to you?

I got the idea for portraying a major city (in this case NYC) which had been ravaged by climactic change first. That happened very naturally. I lived there and it was interesting to replace all that concrete and steel with destruction, move the roads around, knock down buildings, and turn the Hudson River into a sea. Once I had that picture in my head, I saw a teen girl there. All alone, looking out at the water. I think all writers put themselves into their characters. Sometimes the best of themselves, sometimes the worst, or a mix of both. Lucy is not perfect (like me!) but she is strong within herself. She has a sense of what matters to her, and a streak of independence and stubbornness. Once I had her figured out, it was almost like she let me know how she felt about the situations I was putting her into. She felt real to me, and I had to stay true to her.

2. Some of society’s worst fears are realized in Ashes, Ashes. The fact that they are all plausible makes the story even scarier... out of the perils happening in Lucy’s world- which one would you/do you fear the most?

The Sweepers and Dr. Lessing scare me the most. I don’t want to give anything anyway, but inflexibility, human obsession and a belief that might is right, can be terrifying things.
As far as the natural disasters go, the tsunami scares me the most. I almost lost a very dear friend in the Indian tsunami disaster in 2004. Just watching the news footage gave me nightmares.

3. Dystopian story lines are becoming more and more popular, what do you think draws readers to them?

The human spirit is always at the heart of any dystopian and I think that is very attractive to us. Just that spark of rebellion or individuality in the midst of rigid social order or restriction. As far as post-apocalyptic fiction goes, I think survivors are always interesting. They have lived through something that is unimaginable.

4. Feeling the need to let all the trivial everyday stuff slide away is one of the many things I got from reading Ashes, Ashes. Did you intend that message when you were writing?

Not really an intended message but I think that we do get wrapped up in trivial stuff sometimes (not that that is bad necessarily. I wouldn’t want life to be all serious. We must have chocolate and escapist movies!) and forget what is really important, which to me comes down to friends and family, and trying to be kind to each other. If you’re not sure where your next meal is coming from, you might not care so much about your manicure or the fact that some other girl is flirting with your crush.

5. If your shelter was about to be flooded and you could only grab three items what would they be and why?

Matches, a sharp knife and a blanket. (This is assuming that I have neither children or dogs, right?!). The ability to make a fire is crucial; a knife can be used as a tool and also a weapon; and I could make the blanket into a tent or a sleeping roll or hang it as a screen or wear it as a poncho.

6. Anything else you’d like readers to know? Events or signings coming up?

I’m not sure where your readers are located but if any are in Nova Scotia I’m doing signings and readings at Woozles and Chapters/Bayers Lake on June 18th as part of the Atlantic Author Day. Oh and later on in the summer, I’ll be at the Halifax Word on the Street literary festival. I’ll post all details of those and other events on my website: http://www.jotreggiari.com/

It's hard to believe that a year has gone by, time goes quickly when your having fun. I know thats cliche but it's so very true. I had no idea a year ago today that I would have actual people (you) reading my thoughts about books and I'm so grateful for it. I had no idea a year ago today that I would be a part of such a fabulous community, who supports me in my blogging life and "real life" too.
Huge thankyous to Ginger from GReads who has been so generous, including helping me with graphics including the one you see above (she's incredibly talented) .
